With the goal of conserving our environment, 180 Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) employees and their loved ones engaged in a beach clean-up in Gqeberha on Saturday 11 November. The Show of Hands volunteer event was held in partnership with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).

Cleaning up a 2.2-kilometre stretch of beach was the goal, and the volunteers did a fantastic job rising to the occasion. In 2 hours, 100 bags of litter were collected, sorted and recycled.

Assisting with the initiative, WESSA contributed their expertise on waste collection and helped choose a location that would be most impactful. During the clean-up, the young children in attendance were educated on ways to become more environmentally conscious in the future.

For VWSA, environmental sustainability is a critical priority. In October, the company was awarded the International Lean & Green Management Award and the SJM Flex Environmental Award from Exporters Eastern Cape.

“It is no wonder that we are able to achieve such accolades when our employees are clearly as passionate about the environment as we are,” said Nonkqubela Maliza, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at VWSA. “Thank you to every volunteer who gave their time and energy to make a difference this weekend for this cause.”
